Working Towards Birthing Justice
In partnership with a Women in The Room Productions, the Center of Excellence hosted a screening of Birthing Justice with amazing panelists. On March 24, 2023, and under the leadership of Dr. Monica Ruiz, Center GSAs Sydney Durrah and Maria Wallace and other members of the GWMCH Network planned and organized a special viewing of Women in The Room’s film Birthing Justice: Every Woman Deserves a Beautiful Birth Story. A panel was also held immediately following the screening, moderated by MCH second-year student India Hinton, and featuring distinguished panelists Dr. Jasmine Bihm, Dr. Yolandra Hancock, and Dr. Ebony Marcelle. The film focused on the experiences of Black women throughout the nation in the pregnancy and postpartum period, and highlighted the need for community engagement. The panelists (some of which were featured in the film) discussed the burden of maternal mortality on Black women and communities and how to advocate and address issues now. The event was opened to all of GWSPH and community members, and had over 70 attendees!
Sydney Durrah, Center GRA and one of the event's organizers, said "We hope that the film has helped shed light on the pressing issue of Black maternal health disparities and the need for a more equitable and just healthcare system." Sydney also thanked the participants and said, "Your presence and participation made this event a success, and we are honored to have had the opportunity to share this experience with you. We appreciate your commitment to this cause and hope that you will continue to support our efforts to promote birthing justice."
To our phenomenal panelists: Dr. Bihm, Dr. Hancock and Dr. Marcelle. We extend our sincerest gratitude for your participation as panelists. Your insights and expertise provided invaluable contributions to discussion, and we are honored to have had you as a part of the event.
